Muraqqa’
- Imperial Mughal Albums from the Chester Beatty Library

By Dr Elaine Wright; price €30.00

Muraqqa’ was written to coincide with a travelling exhibition of the Chester Beatty Library’s Mughal paintings, which visited Washington, Detroit, Honolulu, Kansas City and Denver.  This accompanying catalogue displays some of the finest examples of the painter’s art created for the emperors and princes of the Mughal dynasty of India, between the late-16th and mid-17th centuries.  The focus of this study is six albums produced in the imperial Mughal atelier during the first six decades of the 17th century for the emperors Jahangir and Shah Jahan.

While dominated by the Islamic traditions of the emperors and their followers, Mughal India was a place of great cultural and ethnic diversity where a new hybrid culture developed and flourished for a time.  The achievements of the Mughals in painting, literature, architecture, and the decorative arts were immense, and they are reflected in this beautiful collection of jewel-like paintings.
