'The Art of Friendship: Japanese Surimono Print' exhibition was held in the Chester Beatty Library from March to August 2017, to mark the 60th year anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between Japan and Ireland.
The word surimono means ‘printed thing’ in Japanese. These were privately commissioned by poetry groups, typically as gifts for special occasions such as the New Year. The quality and refinement of surimono appealed to Sir Chester Beatty and he amassed a collection considered one of the finest in the world.
