The Bodhisattva Jizo

15th Century AD, Japan
J 1214

In Mahayana Buddhism, the type of Buddhism dominant in Japan, the historical Buddha is accompanied by a host of divine beings, available for worship to all. These include bodhisattvas, enlightened beings who postpone their own entry into nirvana in order to help others. Jizo is one of the most popular bodhisattvas in Japan, usually represented as a monk with a wish-granting jewel in one hand and a staff in the other. Jizo is particularly regarded as the saviour of children and those suffering in hell.
