Albrecht Dürer
Opening Date: 10 November 2005
Closing Date: 16 April 2006
Location: The Chester Beatty Library, Dublin
The collection of prints by Albrecht Dürer held by the Chester Beatty Library was first brought to public attention in the 1980s with a series of exhibitions in Ireland, England, Germany and later Japan. It was not generally realised that A. Chester Beatty (1875-1968), the foremost Anglo-American collector of Islamic and Asian books, had also amassed a fine collection of European prints. He had been interested in this area almost from the very start of his collecting career and had acquired a small number of Dürer prints while still living in New York in the early years of the twentieth century. Beatty's last Dürer acquisitions were made in 1955.
