Bealtaine Festival 2011

Bealtaine is a month-long arts festival that takes place throughout Ireland in May every year. It aims to engage older people in the arts in a participative and collective manner. The Chester Beatty Library has been a festival partner since 2001 and participated again in 2011.

The three-day event at the Library (27th to 29th of May 2011) was based on The Arts Book of Henri Matisse exhibition. Two facilitators conducted the workshop, Ms Lorraine Lawlor and Ms Fiona Cashell, starting with a guided tour of the exhibition by the curator Dr Jill Unkel for all participants.  Dr Unkel outlined what an 'art book' actually is and the techniques Matisse utilised to create these books. Over the next three days, participants then produced and decorated their own art books, including poems, songs, proverbs, etc.

Ms Aoibheann O’Sullivan (Distilled Ideas) recorded a short podcast capturing the participants' experiences during the event. Aoibheann interviewed 12 participants in total and created individual interview style podcasts as well as a longer reportage style podcast, where she talks to participants and also introduces the Library and The Art Books of Henri Matisse exhibition (interview with Fiona Cashell).

The creative work was also photographed throughout the three days and photos and podcasts are available via the linked names  below.
